Feminism and girly stuff: Girl Power at the Brixton Pound!
I am delighted to be hosting my first ever solo exhbition at the Brixton Pound Cafe from 19th february to 5th March. My show is titled 'Girl Power' and as the title suggests, is all about the theme of gender and identity.
In a Trump era, a world where sexism and misogyny is sadly ever-present and inequality seems to be on the increase, this show is my celebration of all things female and what it means to be 'female' to me. I have chosen to show selected paintings that look at various facets of feminine identity. I explore everything from sexuality and sensuality represented by the wolf in paintings 'She-Wolf' 'Little Red Riding Hood' and 'Nature Spirit'; to unconventional expressions of femaleness in 'I'm Your Venus'; religion and culture in 'The Flip-Side of the Coin' and achievement and success with my 'Colourful Women' portraits.
The Brixton Pound Cafe is the first cafe in Brixton which operates on a 'pay what you feel' basis. The cafe was founded upon the same principles as the local currency the 'Brixton Pound'; which aims to question the tradtional money system by providing a viable, affordable alternative. All food and drinks are sourced locally from surplus. All funds generated from the cafe go towards local community projects.
Show runs: 19th February-5th March 2017
Private View: Friday 24th February from 7.30pm
Part of profits from sold artwork will go towards the Brixton Fund.
