Colourful Women - A celebration of women

01/06/2014 20:12

As a recent viral on social media stated 'Women are ****ing awesome', and it's precisely this sentiment that led me, on International Women's Day, to paint a series of portraits of outstanding females - modern 'heroines', if you like. Women's rights is very much a 'hot topic' at the moment, and with so much violence against women plastered all over the news, women's achievements often go unmentioned.  The series of four, entitled 'Colourful Women' aims to correct that balance. It depicts political, social and environmental campaigners from all corners of the globe, with extroadinary life stories - just a few of the many women that I admire for their efforts to make the world a better place.  The portraits are painted in Warhol-esque 'pop-art' bright, block colours -  a departure from my usual style.  I felt that these larger than life individuals deserved to stand out from the crowd!
